White Bread Essay -- Observation Essay, Descriptive
White BreadThe plastic wrapper of a loaf of Wonder scribbles DItaliano white bread is colored nitidly with the primary colors one associates with childhood and kindergarten playroom activities. The swirling script lettering of the word DItaliano makes the bread seem somehow more special than bread packaged with ordinary block lettering. On both ends of the shiny, clear wrapper, boldly colored round dots resembling bright balloons are arranged upon a blazing red background, conveying the joy and happiness the bread would bring to any sandwich and my fifteen-year-old life. Once, the bread represented a hopefulness and freshness that I hoped my life would someday acquire. However, the bread also served as a painful reminder of the dismal nature of our empty, barely paid for flatbed that my single mother, sister, and I shared. The bread symbolized both the good and bad aspects of that particularly intense period on the one hand, the potential to be just alike(p) any other kid my age, but on the other, all the things our small family lacked and my inadequacy at being what I considered normal. Growing up in sensitive Jersey, my sister and I were raised without a father in the house throughout most of our childhood. My uneducated mother always held at least devil jobs to provide the barest essentials such as a roof over our heads and food in the kitchen. She was usually employed as a waitress or bartender, which meant posthumous hours for her and a lot of time alone for my sister and me. During my early teenage years, I remember coming home from school on most days with a teenagers typically ravenous appetite. However, I usually found our kitchen disappointingly void of any kind of snack food. Although the refrigerator contained mai... ...sisters lovely face greeting me at the terminal gate, all my negative thoughts vanished, and I raced to hug her. During the visit, my mother and I went grocery shopping together at the same store I had freq uented as a young teenager. The excursion seemed mostly uneventful until I spied the loaves of DItaliano bread piled atop the shelves in the bread aisle. For a moment, I was transported back to that empty apartment where I had endured the most unhappy times of my childhood. The irony of the situation was that I was reliving the past bandage standing with my mother. She picked up a loaf and tossed it into the cart unaware of the profound effect the bread had on me. She turned to me and said, You said you were hungry. Would you like me to fix you a tuna sandwich when we get home? Stunned, I could only reply, Yes, that would be fine, and we moved on.

Lessons from The Piano Lesson by August Wilson Essay -- The Piano Less
What should one do with their legacy, and how should it be put to use? In the play The Piano Lesson, the Charles family faces this question, and struggles to find the answer. The familys legacy is in the form of a balmy. On the piano are carvings of their ancestors. The two main characters that are having a conflict over the piano are Berniece and boy Willie. Boy Willie wants to sell the piano so he can add the proceeds of the sale to the proceeds of selling watermelons and buy roughly land from Sutter. Berniece doesnt want to sell the piano because it holds the memories and blood that stains its wood (Gale, 2000, p255). She refuses to play the piano and keeps its history from her daughter in fear of calling up the spirits that might lie within the piano. The main symbol of the play is the 137-year-old piano, an object that holds a key to the family history. It takes on a number of meanings through the unravel of its life. It was carved to make Miss Ophelia happy, the pianos w ooden figures indicate the interchangeable nature of slavery. As Doaker notes, who is Berniece and Boy willies uncle, Now she had her piano and her niggers too. (ACT I, p741) The slave is the masters gift and accessory. The piano visibly records the lost lives of Berniece and Boy Willies ancestors, and it is the only tangible link remaining between past and present (Galens 2000). The piano also becomes a symbolic attempt to keep the family together. It is also then the physical record of the familys history. Boy Charles especially understands the carvings as narrative. As Doaker recalls say it was the story of our whole family and as foresighted as Sutter had it he had us. Say we was still in slavery. (Act I, p741)It might appear as if Be... ...ing ones legacy is answered so simply. The living draw strength from the ghosts of the past and the ghosts serve to the living because they speak from that very place. Rites of Passage in Australia :: essays research papers
Rituals act as signposts to assist us in recognizing the splendor of particular passages in our lives. In an Australian context, the passage from childhood to adulthood is less formal, however, it mirrors the putting surface structures found in rites of passage and ceremonial initiations in most cultures. The transition from secondary to tertiary education, a progression from one liminal space to another, is a process which also has structuralized social conventions the rituals of advanced school graduation, the transitory halt of liminality, the assimilation into university society. Societys formal rituals serve to signpost the individual through the transitory process and to recognize the possible stressors associated with this period to provide a path through the liminal state. The final year of secondary education, a period of life with mutual experiences for all graduates, is accompanied by a level of comradeliness and recognition of common ambiguity of social role. All non liminal distinctions disappeared (Schultz & Lavenda, 2005, p.167) as we were unified by the common rite of passage we were undertaking. Arnold Van Gennep (1960) noted that any reason within the social structure involves a temporary musical interval from the individuals role in that society (Schultz & Lavenda, 2005, p167). In Kung culture, the formalized separation during the manly initiation ceremony of Choma, demonstrates the structure found universally in most rituals of social movement, as well as the necessity for a period of separation from social role (Shostak 2002, p.215). Separation from the social position of boys under the authority of the academic institution, was a process principally marked by liberation from the restraints and regulations of high school life, and an introduction to the responsibilities of manhood. The ritual of the graduation ceremony symbolizes this comradeship through the celebration of the essential and genetic human bonds (Turner 1969, p.97). Th is bond was the social transition common to all graduates, and provided personal comfort in the knowledge that this process was natural and therefore, nobody was alone on that path to adulthood. The period of era after graduation, and the rituals associated with that time result from the liminal state of social responsibility experienced by most after graduating lack of social role, lack of structure and potential danger atomic number 18 all aspects of this phase. Australian culture has labeled this group high-school Leavers, as many behavioral traits argon common to this entire group. As a Leaver, ritualized behaviors are associated with the individual using ritual and communitas to cope with a new paradox freedom and liberation from previous social restraints brings greater social expectation and responsibility.

The Birth of the International Union of Elevator Constructors :: IUEC Construction Employment Essays
The Birth of the International Union of Elevator ConstructorsThe International Union of Elevator Constructors began inauspiciously on a hot summer day in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was July 15, 1901. Eleven men were gathered in a room at the Griswold Hotel. Brothers H. McLaughlin and E. Oliver came from New York, Brothers J.S. Holmes and John Lally from Chicago, F. W. Doyle from St. Louis, Walter McIntire and Frank F. Moxon from Boston, Brothers W. Young and J. Giberson from Philadelphia, and of course, Brothers George W. Porter and David G. Barnett from Pittsburgh. It did not steer this small group long to come to an agreement. These men represented locals in their cities that, they decided, would benefit from a broader base of power and representation. There were other cities that had formed unions at this time but did not attend this meeting in Pittsburgh . At the meeting in the Griswold Hotel, John Lally was appointed as temporary escritoire and was later elected 1st General Vice-President. Committees were formed to draft rules of order, by-laws, and a constitution. The representatives worked through the night and presented their work collectively in the morning. Everything was adopted, and the unions framework was in place. By lunch, the officers of the new union had been nominated, elected, and installed. The first President of the fledgling national union was F.W. Doyle of St. Louis. Election results made H. McLaughlin 2nd Vice-President, D.G. Barnett 3rd General Vice-President, Joseph Giberson 4th General Vice-President, and Walter McIntire fifth General Vice-President. William Young was elected General Secretary Treasurer. They were unanimous in their resolve and solidarity. They knew what they wanted, and they created it together in record time. The same day, charters were applied for a $5 charter fee was paid and six locals suddenly had been transformed into a national trade union. Quickly, they made application for charter and membership in the national Building Trades Council of the American Federation of Labor. It was a no nonsense beginning. The total expense of the convention was $13.90. After the collection of the charter fees, the newly formed field of study Union of Elevator Constructors went home with a treasury in the black of $16.10.It had taken just three days to form an organization which would promote and foster the interests of thousands of elevator constructors across America then and now. The IUEC, like many of the building trades unions, came at the dawn of the modern technological revolution, which had as a first symbol, the skyscraper just now there could be no skyscrapers without elevators.
The View from the Bottom Rail Essay -- essays papers
The gaze from the Bottom RailThe Lewinsky Scandal A absolute example as to why we cannot accept everything at face value forward carefully examining it first. Everyone thought President Clinton was behaving himself in the White House, but, as it turns out, he was more or less definitely not. This can be the same for history. We must carefully consider different aspects of articles so that we do no make the mistake of accept everything we read. In order to fully understand an article, we must understand the author that wrote it. It is necessary to examine prejudices, microbes, information left out, and missing background information before accepting an article. This method of critical analysis allows us to better understand the article and therefore history because we are more aware of the authors and their possible mishaps. The View from the Bottom Rail, an article in After the Fact, provides an opportunity to examine different aspects of analysis. If we look at it caref ully, then we will be able to follow if the thesis was proven effectively. In The View from the Bottom Rail, the authors, James Davidson and Mark Lytle, proposed, For several reasons, that debased position has made it unusually difficult for historians to find out the freedmans point of view. Within the article, Davidson and Lytle cycled through different aspects as to why it is hard for historians to determine the view from the bottom rail. They questioned the validity of many sources that, if spotless, would have contained the perspective of an ex-slave. These sources included both white and black testimony. In order to examine these sources, the authors traced the topics using microcosm. Because they were covering a topic and not an event, microcosm was the most appropriate method of examining the subject. Davidson and Lytle first introduced a source. Then, they pondered over the different ways that the source could be biased. They took small segments from the source a nd used those to demonstrate why the source could not be taken at face value. For example, when examining the proposed source of a slave masters account, Davidson and Lytle examined one aspect of this to make a conclusion. They placed that, With slaves so dependent on the masters authority, they were hardly likely to reveal their true feelings the dangerous consequences of such indiscr... ...s old. The authors do question whether her mental spot was viable or not. However, further background information was needed. It was imperative for the authors to examine the validity of this source before using it. It is not know if the ex-slave was capable of recalling accurate details of her life. Since the authors argument was that the same slave told two different stories depending on the circumstances of the interview, how do we know if the stories varied because of the circumstances or because of a poor people or maybe even imaginative memory? This background information would make the authors arguments even more convincing. However, if we assume that the ex-slave was capable, then the argument is flawless.Overall, the article was rise up written. Only minor aspects were left uncovered. In addition, not much background information was needed. Also, the authors only had sparse and subtle prejudices. A variety of sources was used effectively. In the end, the thesis was proven convincingly. Almost all audiences would be assured that, For several reasons, that debased position has made it unusually difficult for historians to recover the freedmans point of view.
